Red Dot Magnifiers [Shopping Guide & Best Combos]

Red dots own CQB, but beyond 100 yards, they start showing their limitations. However, what if you need to reach further? The solution here is a red dot magnifier. This guide covers everything you need to know about sight magnifiers and how to choose the right red dot magnifier combo for your rifle.

What is a Red Dot Magnifier and How Does it Work?

A red dot magnifier is essentially a fixed power scope that mounts behind your red dot sight. When flipped into position, it magnifies everything in your sight picture (including the dot) by a fixed amount, typically 3x to 6x.

The beauty lies in modularity the sight magnifier adds to your AR setup. You can engage close targets with the speed of an unmagnified red dot, then flip the magnifier in place for longer shots without changing your cheek weld or sight picture significantly.

The magnifier doesn’t change your zero since it’s simply magnifying what’s already there. This means you can remove it, swap it between rifles, or upgrade to a different magnification level without affecting your red dot’s point of impact.

Eye relief becomes more restrictive with magnifiers engaged, typically ranging from 2.2 to 2.75 inches. This is tighter than most LPVOs, but manageable with proper stock adjustment and consistent shooting form.

Red Dot Magnifier vs LPVO

Should you run a red dot magnifier combo, or go with a low-power variable optic (LPVO)? Let’s see.

Red dot magnifier combinations absolutely dominate in close-range scenarios. A decent non-magnified red dot beats even premium LPVOs for speed and sight picture clarity. There’s no eye box to worry about, no eye relief limit, and target acquisition feels almost instinctive.

When the magnifier flips into position, you get adequate magnification for shots out to 200-300 yards depending on your shooting ability and target size. The system maintains the same sight picture you’re accustomed to, just magnified, which makes the transition seamless.

LPVOs offer superior versatility with multiple magnification levels between minimum and maximum settings. A quality 1-6x or 1-8x scope allows you dial in 4x or 5x magnification with proper reticles designed for precision work. Glass quality typically exceeds magnifier optics at higher magnifications, and you’re not limited to just one magnification.

However, even the best LPVO at 1x power doesn’t match a quality true 1x red dot for close-range performance.

As far as weight distribution goes, a red dot magnifier combo wins as well. A typical red dot and magnifier setup runs 10-18 ounces with weight concentrated closer to the receiver. LPVOs often weigh 16-24 ounces without mounts and require well-built mounting systems that add even more weight toward the muzzle.

Finally, you can set up an excellent red dot magnifier combo for significantly less than most quality variable optics while getting a good reach for longer range targets.

Magnification Power

Most magnifiers offer fixed magnification between 2x and 6x, with 3x being the sweet spot for most shooters.

3x magnification extends your effective range to roughly 300 yards while maintaining a reasonable eye box and FOV. The rule of thumb suggests 1x magnification for every 100 yards of intended range, making 3x perfect for 300-yard capability. This aligns well with most intermediate cartridge performance from standard barrel lengths.

Higher magnification, like 5x or 6x, offer better target resolution at distance but come with significant tradeoffs. Eye box becomes much more critical, field of view shrinks considerably, and the setup becomes less forgiving for rapid target engagement.

I’ve found that shooters who think they need 5x or 6x magnification often discover they actually need a proper LPVO instead. If you’re regularly engaging targets beyond 300 yards or need that much magnification frequently, a variable power optic makes more sense than a high-power magnifier.

Lower magnification options like 2x exist but offer minimal advantage over quality red dots for most applications. The added complexity and weight aren’t justified by the modest improvement in target resolution.

Consider your typical engagement distances honestly. If 80% of your shooting happens inside 150 yards with occasional shots to 250 yards, 3x magnification handles everything you need. If you regularly shoot beyond 300 yards, start looking at LPVOs instead.

Magnifier Sizes and Eye Relief

Magnifier size plays a big role in how well it works with your rifle setup. Smaller red dot magnifiers are lightweight and compact, making them a great fit for smaller rifles like bullpups, SBRs, or AR pistols. But they usually have shorter eye relief, so you’ll need to mount them closer to your eye to get a clear view. This can be tricky on traditional AR platforms, where the magnifier might get in the way of the charging handle or force you to adjust your shooting position.

On the flip side, larger magnifiers give you better eye relief and a more forgiving eyebox, making them more comfortable for longer use. They’re a better match for traditional ARs, though they might add some extra weight and bulk compared to shorter units (but not a strict rule; weight depends on the engineering). That said, they’re easier to use.

EOTECH G33 Sight Magnifier with STS Mount (G33STS)

EOTech G33 Magnifier + EXPS3

The EOTech G33 magnifier + the EXPS3 sight combo is ideal for serious applications. The G33 demonstrates excellent performance in the field conditions and consistently delivers great performance. The glass quality is outstanding, with colors appearing more vibrant than other magnifiers I’ve tested.

The G33’s longer body allows mounting forward of backup iron sights while maintaining decent eye relief. The QD mount is smooth and returns to zero reliably – I’ve never had issues with POI shift after flipping it back into position.

That said, the G33 does have some edge distortion, more than other magnifiers I’ve used. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s noticeable if you’re looking for it. The premium price point also puts it out of reach for many shooters, but if you can afford it, the G33 is worth the investment.

You’ll also see the G43 and G45 magnifiers. However, I still suggest you get the G33. The G43 is smaller and more compact than the G33, but it needs to be mounted further back to get proper eye relief. This can interfere with the charging handle access and might not leave room for backup irons. Interestingly, despite being smaller, the G43 is slightly heavier than the G33. The G45, on the other hand, offers 5x magnification, which is great for long-range shooting, but for most uses, the 3x magnification of the G33 or G43 is more practical and versatile.

Paired with an EXPS3 holographic sight, this combination gives you the speed of a holographic reticle with 3x magnification capability. The holographic reticle actually looks cleaner under magnification compared to some red dots. Eye relief runs about 2.2 inches, which works for most shooters but can feel restrictive.

VORTEX Micro 3x Magnifier (V3XM)

Vortex Micro 3X + Various Red Dots

Vortex Micro 3X offers excellent versatility since it works well with most red dot brands. The compact design reduces weight while maintaining good optical performance. The company’s VIP warranty provides excellent customer support.

Glass quality is very good for the price point. The short body can create mounting challenges with some rifle configurations, particularly regarding charging handle clearance. However, it’s an excellent option for bullpup rifles.

This magnifier works particularly well with Vortex’s own red dots but pairs adequately with most quality options. It represents solid middle-ground performance at a reasonable price.
