“Early Season” Warm Weather Gear For Women

Last Updated on

Early fall is an incredible time to hunt deer; unpressured bucks have broken up from their bachelor groups and are rather predictable on food sources. A major disadvantage and one that keeps many hunters from trekking to their favorite hunting spot is the inopportunely warm conditions during early season hunting. Hunting in warm weather and high humidity can get uncomfortable quickly; particularly with temperatures that are above 80 degrees in most states during those early fall months.

Early Season hunting can be the most challenging season when deciding what to wear, more particularly for women hunters because of a limited availability of quality hunting garments. With chilly pre-dawn mornings that rapidly warm up to the hot and humid conditions throughout the day and then drop swiftly in the late afternoon, it is important to be prepared with layers that can be removed or added as needed. The South-Southeast can be the most brutal. Humid and muggy mornings heat up so quickly you usually sweat on your walk to the stand and catch a chill once in the stand, sitting still. It is important to wear clothes that are breathable and made of moisture wicking properties that are easy to layer. What you wear into the woods can make a huge difference in how comfortable you are and how long you endure the hunt, especially if you are stalking and/or exerting energy.

The materials that garments are fabricated of are vital and can make a significant difference in comfort and performance. It is important to know that cotton and cotton blends absorb moisture and do not allow the material to breathe which, in turn, will not allow you to perspire. Perspiration is the body’s means of cooling. Research and technology and has incorporated the body’s natural function of perspiring with new performance materials that wick away sweat from the body and allow the body to breathe and naturally cool. These new materials also perform well in cool temperatures by keeping the body drier and fending off chills from dropping temperatures. Another great feature of these new wicking materials is that they not only withstand the elements well, they are durable, launder well and are fast drying.

Older technology and design made waterproof or windproof clothing noisy and less breathable. Not until the last few years have companies had the technology to make waterproof/windproof membranes of lighter, quieter, breathable more comfortable materials. Most of the garment companies that offer early season hunting wear are now offering water resistant or waterproof lightweight clothing, which is always an added benefit with rapidly changing forecasts.

Many of the hunting clothes manufacturers offer products in a variety of styles and prices from which one can choose items that are sure to fit into any budget.
